Best of the Week – 4512

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

http://youtu.be/iEMmL0uQYeY?hd=1
Synopsis: The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff. This film will mark a return to acting for veteran action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger, and pair him up with Johnny Knoxville, Harry Dean Stanton and one of my favourite hispanic actors, Luis Guzman.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Angry Birds: Star Wars

They teased us with this one not so long ago, and yesterday (November 8th, 2012) was release day. News Article of the Week:

President Obama wins a second term.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/07/obama-acceptance-speech_n_2086832.html
There is no way you could avoid hearing this news, it was everywhere, and dominated Tuesday night’s television lineup. In what was expected to be one of the closest elections in recent history, turned into a steam rolling, with Obama claiming all the swing states with the exception of North Carolina. I’m guessing that binders full of women and threatening to kill Big Bird didn’t help Mitt Romney out at all. Something to note though, Mitt did take ~48% of the popular vote,,, just goes to show how different the Electoral College system is from what we have here in Canada.

2012 US Presidential Election Results - This week

Awesome Software of the Week:

Jam with Chrome by Google.

How cool would it be if you could collaborate with your friends to make music online without any instruments? Google has stepped up and given us Jam with Chrome, which does exactly that. You can pick from a large choice of guitars, bass guitars, drums, keyboards and more, and play along with friends online.

I also feel that I will be returning to posting satirical or humorous news articles more… it just felt right.

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 4412

The film takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins as the title character, Helen Mirren as Alma Reville, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles and one of my favourite sexy actresses, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh

YouTube Video of the Week:

YouTube channel you should be subscribed to, of the week:

Watch The Guild – Staring Felicia Day
https://www.youtube.com/user/watchtheguild?feature=watch

The Guild is an independent sitcom web series about a group of online gamers. The show started in the late summer of 2007, and for the first season was financed solely by PayPal donations from LOYAL FANS. Since season 2, The Guild has been distributed by Xbox Live and Microsoft and sponsored by Sprint.
Episodes vary from 3-8 minutes in length, and follow the Guild members’ lives online and offline.
“The Guild” has won many awards, including the SXSW, YouTube and Yahoo Web Series Awards in 2008, and 3 Streamy Awards in 2009: Best Comedy Web Series, Best Ensemble, and Best Actress for Felicia Day.

News Article of the Week:

Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 Billion
http://www.forbes.com/sites/ericsavitz/2012/10/30/mickey-meet-yoda-disney-to-buy-lucasfilm-for-4-05-billion/
And this is how we light up the internet and spark off the Nerd Wars. Some think this will kill the franchise, especially with Disney announcing that they plan to have Star Wars : Episode VII (7) out by 2015. Personally, I think George Lucas made the right move, he’s done enough and can now enjoy his retirement.
George Lucas and Mickey Mouse, big news this week

That makes this true:
Leia, now a Disney Princess

Best of the Week – 4212

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Cloud Atlas – In theatres October 26th, 2012

Synopsis: Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. Each member of the ensemble appears in multiple roles as the stories move through time. The cast includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant

YouTube Video of the Week:

Psy vs. Ghostbusters – Gangnam Busters

I’m really starting to wonder when our obsession with PSY will end… nvm, this guy is pure awesome, and mashing him up with Ray Parker Jr. and the Ghostbusters just works.

YouTube channel you should be subscribed to, of the week:

What’s Trending – Hosted by Shira Lazar
https://www.youtube.com/user/Whatstrending?feature=watch
This is probably my new favourite channel… well, maybe second favourite channel to subscribe to. Shira and the crew at What’s Trending go out and find the top 5 videos on YouTube every day, plus they get in special guest hosts to help out, and normally post interviews afterwards with some of the people featured on their show. It probably helps that Shira is easy on the eyes, at least in my opinion.

News Article of the Week:

Former McOwner sells 20 year old McJordan sauce for $10,000.
http://www.kxan.com/dpps/news/strange/nd-man-sells-mcjordan-barbecue-sauce-for-10k-nd12-jgr_4800468
First off… Really? Someone was willing to shell out $10,000 for 20 year old McDonald’s barbecue sauce? Second, who would want to save a gallon (3.785 Litres for us metric folk) of special sauce that is named after Micheal Jordan. It probably helps that MJ (not Micheal Jackson) is one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Cool software (sort of) of the Week:

https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/streetview/
Google takes us for a virtual tour of one of their data center‘s. Here you can take a streetview like walk though parts of the Lenior, NC. location, and although you don’t get to see everything, there are some interesting things to look for, almost like Easter Eggs. I managed to find the Stormtrooper and R2-D2, the giant Android and got Rick Rolled. There a few more you can find listed here.

Google Android, found this week on streetview.
Google Android in a server cage, found him this week.

Best of the Week – 4112

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Happy 10-11-12 to my American friends. (it’s 11-10-12 here in Canada… and most of the rest of the world.)

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Lincoln – In theatres November 16th, 2012
http://youtu.be/qiSAbAuLhqs?hd=1
Synopsis: As the Civil War continues to rage, America’s president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves. Steven Spielberg is back at the helm for what should be another amazing work, this time getting the Oscar winning trio of Daniel Day-LewisTommy Lee Jones and Sally Field. Add in James Spader and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and you have an all-star cast to tell part of the story of one of the United States’ greatest presidents.

YouTube Video of the Week:
The Guild – Season 6, Episode 1
http://youtu.be/XTd2fCqulKM?hd=1
What is probably one of the best, if not the best, web series out there right now is back for Season 6. Codex has landed a new job as the assistant to the creator of The Game, a World of Warcraft like MMO which is played by Felicia Days character, along with the other members of the Knights of Good. I cannot wait to see what adventures are in store for Vork, Clara, Tink, Bladezz and Zaboo.

Felicia Day, best director of the week.
Felicia Day, one of the cutest Redheads out there.

News Article of the Week:
Tennet trying to cook a squirrel, set apartment complex on fire.
http://www.firstcoastnews.com/rss/article/277709/82/Squirrel-dinner-prep-maybe-sparked-Michigan-fire
I know I should not find this story as amusing as I do… but really, trying to cook a squirrel on your deck? This is one reason I am glad I do not live in an apartment of attached home.

Kijiji Ad of the Week:

As my friend Micah put it… “Shut up and take my money already!!”. This guy sounds legit, and appears to have the creditably to back it up. Of course, if you have a rake like body type like me, and the metabolism of a garbage disposal (although mine is starting to falter… ), then this might be a bit beyond what you can do.

Best of the Week – 4012

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning – In theatres November 30th, 2012, Has already been screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
http://youtu.be/dcTHIB7GfCM?hd=1
Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren reprise their roles as Luc Deveraux and Andrew Scott, this time leading an army of Unisols without government oversight, weeding out the weak and constantly testing their strongest warriors in bloody, life-and-death combat. One of the most brutal entries of the series to date, it works as a sequel for long time fans, or as a stand-alone film for newcomers to the series.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Chase plane extended view of Space Shuttle Endeavour‘s flight over southern California

Endeavour was the last shuttle to be transported to it’s new permanent home, the California Science Centre in Los Angeles, CA. It was transported across the US about Shuttle Carrier Aircraft No. 905, a modified Boeing 747. This is video taken from one, if not both of the chase planes, and includes numerous famous sights in the LA area and a few fly pasts at LAX before finally touching down.

News Article of the Week:

Zidane’s famous World Cup headbutt imortalized as a statue.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/offbeat/story/2012/09/26/zidane-head-butt-statue-paris.html
What is probably the most memorable moment of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where Frances star midfielder Zinedine Zidane headbutted Italy‘s Marco Materazzi after being insulted numerous times, now has another permanent monument… besides the countless videos and meme’s on the internet.

Want! The Ariel Atom is an amazing little car, and it’s road legal. It’s famous for being that car that distorted Jeremy Clarkson‘s face, and for the 500 model being the fastest road legal car to go around the Top Gear test track, with a time of 1:15.1.
Here’s the Top Gear review of the car:

Movie Trailer of the Week:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – In theatres December 14th, 2012
http://youtu.be/yYz0JWJioOM?hd=1
A curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of Dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug. Peter Jackson is back, this time turning a single novel into another 3 part movie series, just like he did with Lord of the Rings. Ian McKellen returns in his roll as Gandalf, along with other cast from the LotR trilogy.

YouTube Video of the Week:
Gangnam Style Parody – Gandalf Style

I hope this never gets old. Gangnam style is awesome! And some of these parodies are amazing. Some guy in Chicago, The US Naval Academy cadets, Deadpool, North fricking Korea and some lifeguards in California. Unfortunately, the city of El Monte, California, was not amused, and the lifeguards were fired, but there is hope.

Honourable Mention:
Elements (Dubstep Violin) – Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey’s musical interpretations are just plain amazing. I strongly suggest watching some of her other videos.

News Article of the Week:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/17/stephen-a-smith-onion-satire-twitter-espn_n_1891816.html?utm_hp_ref=sports
And I was sure everyone had heard of The Onion by now, but not Stephen Smith of ESPN, who went into a legendary rant on twitter, only to find out that he had in fact been had. Queue ‘We won’t get fooled again‘ by The Who.

If only I lived closer to Toronto! Over 17,000 views and apparently numerous applicants have applied to be the Cabana Boy for these 4 ladies on their 4 day holiday. I don’t think men could get away with this… but I’m willing to try next time I go away with the guys.

Awesome Software of the Week:
Humble Bundle 6 – Cross platform
https://www.humblebundle.com/
Humble Bundle is back! You pick what you pay for 5 awesome ‘Indie‘ game, including the award winning Torchlight. You will unlock a 6th title if you donate more than the current average, which is just under $6 right now, and for an additional $1 you get keys to add them to Steam. Think of it this way, you decide how much goes to the vendor, the developers and a charity! What could be better, in fact I’ve bought 3 Humble Bundles so far. Oh, did I mention it is cross platform compatible, so you can play on your Windows PC, Mac and even Linux.

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Resident Evil: Retribution – In theatres September 14th, 2012 (Seriously, that’s tomorrow!!)

Alice fights alongside a resistance movement in the continuing battle against the Umbrella Corporation and the undead. This is one of my favourite film franchises, and stars one of my personal favourite actresses, Milla Jovovich. You get Zombies, a crazy virus, a large company that controls a lot of stuff… and hot ladies.

YouTube Video of the Week:
Fountain Boat crash… Dubstepified

What happens when a bunch of people go cruising in a really fast boat and hit the wake of another boat at a bad angle? What happens when you add a small video loop and dubstep music? Internet sensation is what happens.

It also helps that I took that video, and made it even longer…

News Article of the Week:
Man who ejaculated on women in public parks gets sentenced.
http://www.frederictonnewschannel.com/2012/09/man-who-ejaculated-on-women-in-odell.html

Best of the Week – 3612

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
James Bond: Skyfall – In theatres November 9th, 2012

Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Daniel Craig returns as 007 in the 23rd bond film to date (I’m not counting the non ‘EON’ production films), this time with a new Q, the same M and of course, a mastermind villain.

Video Mashup of the Week:
Like A Bad White Guy Party Gangnam Style – PSY, LMFAO, Dev, Offspring, Bloodhound Gang

I’m already a big fan of PSY‘s Gangnam Style video, so what makes more sense than to find an awesome mash up that throws in some LMFAO, Dev, The Offspring and The Bloodhound Gang.

News Article of the Week:
Silicon Chip enables the mass manufacture of quantum technologies
http://www.bris.ac.uk/news/2012/8755.html

This weeks best of the week image, a silicon quantum chip next to 20 pence
a Quantum Chip next to 20 Pence coin

Although it may not be that exciting for most people, this could pave the way for the biggest breakthrough in computing since the embedded circuit. Instead of using electrical currents passing through transistors, diodes and resistors; these new chips would manipulate millions of photons, in essence, Light. These new chips can be made over 1000 times smaller then existing chips, thus enabling us to make smaller devices, and connect device that were never possible before. I can’t wait for my Star Trek style communicator.

eBay Auction of the Week:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mystery-Box-/290770822107?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43b34aa3db#ht_500wt_1414
I’m not even joking… $10,000 for a mystery box that has a hint of ‘Piece of Art’. I could draw a stick figure and call it art.

Awesome Software of the Week:

Best of the Week – 3512

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Taken 2 – In theatres October 5th, 2012
http://youtu.be/VpaT8NzkLgE?hd=1
Need I say more, then this is the sequel to the film that gave us this legendary quote:
“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. ”
And who doesn’t want to see more of Liam Neeson.
P.S. Same plot as the first one… basically.

Video of the Week:

I shot this one, and it’s my doxie… what else can I say.

News Article of the Week:
Elderly lady ‘restores’ church fresco.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19349921
The great Spanish Fresco last week

An elderly parishioner took it upon herself to restore 100+ years of moisture damage to ‘Ecce Homo’, and the results were, well, shall we say a little shocking… Except to the internet, who have adopted it as it’s newest meme.

Awesome Software of the Week:
Planetside 2
http://www.planetside2.com/
The long awaited sequel to one of my favourite MMO‘s is now in closed beta. Planetside is one of the only MMOFPS games ever, and probably the most popular. I was a big fan of the never ending combat, and the ability to jump online, run around for as long as I wanted, and then just leave… something that is hard to do in other online games that require, among other things… RAIDS. I can’t wait for it to come out, or when I finally get my beta invite… and best of all, it will be free to play!

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 3412

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week… after a long summer break, hope you didn’t miss me to much.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Hit & Run – In theatres August 22nd 2012

Not the big budget Hollywood film you might have been expecting, no, this is a much smaller venture almost entirely put together by Dax Shepard, who is probably one of the luckiest guys in the world, as he is dating Kristen Bell, who I think is one of the sexiest ladies in the world (say the bit in italics like Jeremy Clarkson… do it!). The movie is also stars Shepard, Bell, Tom Arnold and Bradley Cooper.

Music Video of the Week:
PSY – Gangnam Style

I’m not even sure what the heck this is about, but apparently, Gangnam is the rich part of Seoul, and let’s be honest here, it is much better than half… no, make that three quarters of the crap that is coming out of recording studios over here now.

News Article of the Week:
Curiosity Rover goes out for its first drive.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19342994

Houston, we have motion. Yup, they did a quick systems check on the little rover to make sure that the wheels, and in turn, all of the locomotion system was functioning correctly. This is good news, since this is one heck of an expensive science experiment… something close to $2.5 billion US has/will be spent on this.

eBay Auction of the Week:

I’m pretty sure this fad died out more than a decade ago, but hey, if you have $650 to burn, you can have your own 4 top (4 person) O2 bar. Oh, and this guy needs to get a real camera and stop using his iPhone to take pictures.

Awesome Software of the Week:
War Thunder
http://warthunder.com/
It’s probably not fair of me to post a game here… let alone one that is still in beta… a beta that I happen to be partaking in. The game combines some of my favourite things… it’s a Free 2 Play game (of course you can buy boosters and stuff) and it involves aerial combat with World War 2 aircraft. You can play in missions, go head to head in massive battles and they are working on what they refer to as ‘Dynamic Campaigns’, where you can change the out come of real battles.
