Best of the Week – 3712

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Resident Evil: Retribution – In theatres September 14th, 2012 (Seriously, that’s tomorrow!!)

Alice fights alongside a resistance movement in the continuing battle against the Umbrella Corporation and the undead. This is one of my favourite film franchises, and stars one of my personal favourite actresses, Milla Jovovich. You get Zombies, a crazy virus, a large company that controls a lot of stuff… and hot ladies.

YouTube Video of the Week:
Fountain Boat crash… Dubstepified

What happens when a bunch of people go cruising in a really fast boat and hit the wake of another boat at a bad angle? What happens when you add a small video loop and dubstep music? Internet sensation is what happens.

It also helps that I took that video, and made it even longer…

News Article of the Week:
Man who ejaculated on women in public parks gets sentenced.
I can’t even make this stuff up. It’s especially funny as it happened in the city were I work, and I drive by both parks daily.

eBay Auction of the Week:
A Pewter Merlin figure – See the auction discription though.
OMG This little piece or worthless metal will make you rich! It will cure Cancer! I take pictures with really bad Instagram filters!

Awesome Software of the Week:
Addons Detector – Android
Want to quickly see which ads and tools each app uses? Addons Detector!
Addons Detector detects addons used by your installed applications and has tools to find push notification ads.
It’s a great way to see what advertising agencies other developers use, and what tools they have integrated.
Or if you are looking for the app that uses AirPush or similar push notifications, you can easily find it and remove it.
Addons Detector for Android - week 37 2012

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 3612

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
James Bond: Skyfall – In theatres November 9th, 2012

Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Daniel Craig returns as 007 in the 23rd bond film to date (I’m not counting the non ‘EON’ production films), this time with a new Q, the same M and of course, a mastermind villain.

Video Mashup of the Week:
Like A Bad White Guy Party Gangnam Style – PSY, LMFAO, Dev, Offspring, Bloodhound Gang

I’m already a big fan of PSY‘s Gangnam Style video, so what makes more sense than to find an awesome mash up that throws in some LMFAO, Dev, The Offspring and The Bloodhound Gang.

News Article of the Week:
Silicon Chip enables the mass manufacture of quantum technologies

This weeks best of the week image, a silicon quantum chip next to 20 pence
a Quantum Chip next to 20 Pence coin

Although it may not be that exciting for most people, this could pave the way for the biggest breakthrough in computing since the embedded circuit. Instead of using electrical currents passing through transistors, diodes and resistors; these new chips would manipulate millions of photons, in essence, Light. These new chips can be made over 1000 times smaller then existing chips, thus enabling us to make smaller devices, and connect device that were never possible before. I can’t wait for my Star Trek style communicator.

eBay Auction of the Week:
A Frickin Mystery Box!!!!
I’m not even joking… $10,000 for a mystery box that has a hint of ‘Piece of Art’. I could draw a stick figure and call it art.

Awesome Software of the Week:
Sky Map – Android
Sky Map turns your Android-powered device into a window on the night sky.
Open sourced and donated by Google.

The video is old, but you get the idea.

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 3512

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Taken 2 – In theatres October 5th, 2012
Need I say more, then this is the sequel to the film that gave us this legendary quote:
“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. ”
And who doesn’t want to see more of Liam Neeson.
P.S. Same plot as the first one… basically.

Video of the Week:
Tinker vs. The Caterpillar

I shot this one, and it’s my doxie… what else can I say.

News Article of the Week:
Elderly lady ‘restores’ church fresco.
The great Spanish Fresco last week

An elderly parishioner took it upon herself to restore 100+ years of moisture damage to ‘Ecce Homo’, and the results were, well, shall we say a little shocking… Except to the internet, who have adopted it as it’s newest meme.

eBay Auction of the Week:
Genuine Black Leather Pony mask Carnival Roleplay Horse Mistress ponyplay New
Suppose you’re into leather? Suppose you’ve recently finished reading 50 Shades of Grey? Suppose you like My Little Pony? Now you can combine all your favourites with this leather bondage horse mask?????

Awesome Software of the Week:
Planetside 2
The long awaited sequel to one of my favourite MMO‘s is now in closed beta. Planetside is one of the only MMOFPS games ever, and probably the most popular. I was a big fan of the never ending combat, and the ability to jump online, run around for as long as I wanted, and then just leave… something that is hard to do in other online games that require, among other things… RAIDS. I can’t wait for it to come out, or when I finally get my beta invite… and best of all, it will be free to play!

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 3412

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week… after a long summer break, hope you didn’t miss me to much.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Hit & Run – In theatres August 22nd 2012

Not the big budget Hollywood film you might have been expecting, no, this is a much smaller venture almost entirely put together by Dax Shepard, who is probably one of the luckiest guys in the world, as he is dating Kristen Bell, who I think is one of the sexiest ladies in the world (say the bit in italics like Jeremy Clarkson… do it!). The movie is also stars Shepard, Bell, Tom Arnold and Bradley Cooper.

Music Video of the Week:
PSY – Gangnam Style

I’m not even sure what the heck this is about, but apparently, Gangnam is the rich part of Seoul, and let’s be honest here, it is much better than half… no, make that three quarters of the crap that is coming out of recording studios over here now.

News Article of the Week:
Curiosity Rover goes out for its first drive.

Houston, we have motion. Yup, they did a quick systems check on the little rover to make sure that the wheels, and in turn, all of the locomotion system was functioning correctly. This is good news, since this is one heck of an expensive science experiment… something close to $2.5 billion US has/will be spent on this.

eBay Auction of the Week:
Oxygen Bar/Aroma Bar
I’m pretty sure this fad died out more than a decade ago, but hey, if you have $650 to burn, you can have your own 4 top (4 person) O2 bar. Oh, and this guy needs to get a real camera and stop using his iPhone to take pictures.

Awesome Software of the Week:
War Thunder
It’s probably not fair of me to post a game here… let alone one that is still in beta… a beta that I happen to be partaking in. The game combines some of my favourite things… it’s a Free 2 Play game (of course you can buy boosters and stuff) and it involves aerial combat with World War 2 aircraft. You can play in missions, go head to head in massive battles and they are working on what they refer to as ‘Dynamic Campaigns’, where you can change the out come of real battles.

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 2712

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Total Recall – In theatre August 3rd 2012

Oh no, I did it again, selected a remake of a film from the 90’s, but this time, it is a retake on one of the best films from that decade. 1990’s Total Recall which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger was an amazing bit of science fiction, and did okay with the special effects that were available at the time. I hope the remake can do it justice.

Video of the Week:
Meet the Pyro

The latest video in the ‘Meet the’ series of videos, used as promotional material for the Team Fortress 2 game, they finally give us the Pyro… and I lol’d.

News Article of the Week:
CERN Discovers ‘God Particle’, Internet scuffs at use of Comic Sans
CernWhat is probably the greatest discovery of our life times, CERN has confirmed (99.9% sure) that they have discovered the Higgs-Boson particle, they decided to use what is considered the worst font ever to use in the presentation that they used to explain to the press on site. Oh Comic Sans, the internet has absolutely no love for you.

eBay Auction of the Week:
Plastination(?) Mummified Cow Brain
Just what every collector needs, and it’s definitely cheaper than this guy, who is selling his baby teeth.

Awesome Software of the Week:
Wow, this is a wonderful little project I stumbled upon recently. It is a project put together by the MIT Media Lab and the Lifelong Kindergarten Group, and it is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art — and share your creations on the web. This is so easy, I had a cat dancing across the work area within 5 minutes, and some of the projects online are amazing.

I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 2612

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Dredd – In theatre September 21st 2012

I don’t always get excited about a reboot/remake, but when I do, I expect awesomesauce. Yes, they are doing a reboot of the 1995 Judge Dredd which starred Sylvester Stallone. Now, the 1995 film wasn’t the best received, or well liked film… but this reboot does look good… and at least they waited 17 years to remake, unlike Spider Man.

Music Mash Up Awesomeness of the Week:
Sarah Donner and The OatmealThe Motherf*cking Pterodactyl

Warning: Language!
Matthew Inman runs The Oatmeal, a fricking awesome site with web comics, odd quizzes and more… and it’s all pure internet genius. Sarah Donner is an indie musician with her own record label, oh, and she loves cats. Together, they created one of the best videos ever.
Currently, Matthew and The Oatmeal are in a bit of a sticky wicket, as another website is trying to sue them for slander… but Matthew decided to leverage this and try and do some good, to the tune of raising $200,000+ to split between the National Wildlife Federation and the American Cancer Society. Here’s a recent article on the shenanigans that are going on.

News Article of the Week:
Google Nexus 7
Shut up and Take my moneyShut up and take my money! Google teamed up with Asus to make the Kindle Fire killer. The specs are amazing, a quad core cpu, 8 or 16gb or storage, 1280×800 display, and all for $199 ($209 in Canada), and add $50 to jump to 16gb. All it is really missing is HDMI out and expandable memory, though the second thing is negated by cloud storage.

eBay Auction of the Week:
4″ Kangaroo Scrotum Leather Pouch
Umm, well at least they got the ‘Pouch’ part. I was going to link to some collector popcorn, but the auction ends too soon.

I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 2512

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:
Ted – In theatre June 29th 2012

This looks like it is going to be a good comedy to get the summer season started. It’s Seth MacFarlanes first full length feature film, and we all know him from Family Guy and American Dad!. Oh, and you might want to check out the more adult version of the trailer too.

Music Mash Up of the Week:
Gorillaz vs Genesis – Stylo Can’t Dance
OMG, the first reader submitted content! (Thanks Melissa)
I was surprised how well the songs meshed together, not to mention the video itself. Gorillaz is famous for their animated videos, and has made some of my favourite songs in the past, and the video for Stylo was no exception… of course, it does help having Bruce Willis in it too. Now we mash in the other awesome that it Genesis, home to the great Phil Collins, and bring in their video and vocals from I can’t Dance, straight out of 1991.

News Article of the Week:
NeverSeconds photo ban lifted
Student write blog about sad state of food in school cafeteria, all while raising money to send food to less fortunate children. School bans student from taking pictures of food to post on blog. Student shuts down blog (no really, but posts message stating she is done). Internet finds out. Internet unleashes upon the school board an epic display of the Streisand Effect. School board council chairman over turns decision, supports freedom of speech and expression.
Martha PayneSeriously, how could you say “No, you cannot take pictures of your food and write a blog about is” to this girl.

eBay Auction of the Week:
Haunted Demon Power Ring!! (warning, seller embedded a youtube video… it’s sad)
I have just one thing to say about this… Lord of The Rings!

Meme of the Week:
Samuel L. Jackson and Siri
Samuel L Jackson Siri

And you can even make your own!!! There are some really awesome ones on this site.

I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Introducing my ‘Of the Week’ postings

Whoa, you’re probably thinking that there is already enough ‘Of the Week’ out there on the Internet… you are wrong, there can never be enough silliness on the internet. So, I am going to do my own and add it into my blog and -try- to keep it going every week.

So, let me start off with a few items to get me going, and I will expand categories and area’s covered later (and with some suggestions… if anyone actually reads this page)

Music Mash up of the Week:
Avicii vs. Adele – Rolling in the Levels.

Why I choose this: I am a fan of trance/techno/house music, of which Avicii is probably the hottest name out there right now, so take his song ‘Levels‘ and combine it with Adele‘s ‘Rolling in the Deep‘ and you get a mash up masterpiece.

eBay auction of the Week:
Fossilized Dinosaur Poop

Dino Poop
Photo: Lynne Hand

Why I choose this: Seriously? Someone actually wants to own fossilized dino poop? Maybe I should start saving Tinker’s daily deposits and find a way to fossilize them fast and sell them…. there might just be a market for it.

Kijiji Ad of the week:
And I quote “Desperate need of a fuel pump for my Chicken Plucker”
Plucked Chicken
Why I choose this: I was intrigued to see a chicken plucker… then I read the description and it was pure gold.
