Best of the Week – 1013

Here we go with with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Oz the Great and Powerful – In theatres March 8th, 2013

Synopsis: A small-time magician arrives in an enchanted land and is forced to decide if he will be a good man or a great one.
Have you ever wanted to know what happened before Dorothy took her magical trip to the Land of Oz? Well, Disney is going to help us out with this prequel that tells the tale of the wizard, also know as Oscar Diggs. This story is based upon L. Frank Baum‘s Wizard of Oz, the author himself never penned this prequel.
James Franco steps in as the lead character and is joined by Michelle Williams as the good witch of the north, Rachel Weisz as the wicked witch of the east, and the gorgeous Mila Kunis as the wicked witch of the west.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Homer Shake – The Simpsons
http://youtu.be/YNrn-7zjmYw?hd=1
We are only a few months into 2013 and we may already have this year’s equivalent of Gangnam Style. Meet the Harlem Shake, not to be confused with the dance that originated in Harlem in the early 1980’s, so popular that even The Simpsons have jumped on board. Personally, I prefer the original full length song by Baauer.

News Article of the Week:

Waitress handed her own stolen ID by alleged thief.
http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/weird/Woman-Arrested-After–195911981.html
So you lose you purse almost a month ago, losing cash, credit cards, etc. The last thing you probably expect to happen? Having your own drivers licence handed to you as proof of age when ordering drinks… well it happened, and the odd part is, that the suspect is listed as being 26 years old, and should have their own licence. Almost Darwin award worthy.

Awesome Software of the Week:

StudioTax
http://www.studiotax.com/
It’s tax time up here in Canada, and in the US also, but since I don’t live there, I don’t trouble myself with understanding their tax system. StudioTax is a CRA and Revenue Quebec certified program to help you prepare and file your federal and provincial taxes. At this time StudioTax is only available for computers running the Windows operating system. The app is secure, and allows you to file up to the 20 return personal limit, and saves your completed returns as PDF’s and in the required NetFile format. The best part, no activation, no registration and it is free, and you are welcome to make a donation to the developers should you wish.

Best of the Week – 0613

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Sorry for the lack of a post last week… we were out buying a new car for my wife.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Top Gun 3D – In theatres February 8th, 2013
http://youtu.be/LZaRCEI4Hr0?hd=1
Synopsis:As students at the Navy’s elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young flyer learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom.
I really want to take a road trip to my nearest IMAX to see this, even if it is a 27-year-old film, and 3D tends to make me vomit. Top Gun is one of the films that drove a love of flying deep down into my core, and made me want to be a military aviator… I say military, since Canada has no naval aviation. The film stars a young Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards, along with Tom Skerritt, Micheal Ironside and Kelly McGillis.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Hitchhiker gives Psycho the ax, the raw footage.

Well, the video above is the raw, uncensored footage of 2013’s biggest viral sensation so far. Kai with no last name was hitchhiking, when the driver of the car he was riding in went nuts and ran into a utility worker, pinning them against their vehicle. Kai, decided to step in and make a difference. Now the internet has another catch phrase/meme to play with… Smash, Smash, Smash!

T
here is just too much wrong about this, I can’t even…
Tattoo Face, news this week.

Game of the Week:

Firefall
Firefall is a sci-fi MMO shooter set in a future Earth. A starship disaster unleashes a titanic energy storm called the Melding. It envelopes the earth, wipes out most of the planet, and spawns hostile creatures who self-proclaim themselves the Chosen.
Players must band together. Uniting in the form of armies, players will need to collect resources to craft weapons and vehicles to fight back the apocalyptic threat of the Chosen invasion. Special Nano-technology suits of armour called Battleframes enhance the human race in this future Earth and allow players to jumpjet across battlefields, wield a variety of exotic weapons of heavy destruction, and use special abilities to reclaim the world.
Created by seasoned developers including the team-lead for vanilla WoW and the lead-designer of Tribes 1 and 2, Firefall’s combat is fast paced, furious, and plays like a top-tier action oriented shooter. But Firefall is equally an MMO, plunging hundreds of players into an all-out Player vs. Environment war against the Chosen army. It is the largest co-op shooter made to date and offers a unique gameplay experience not found anywhere else.

Best of the Week – 0413

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week!

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Movie 43 – In theatres January 25th, 2013

Synopsis:A series of interconnected short films follows three kids as they search the depths of the Internet to find the most banned movie in the world.
I’m not even going to attempt to name any of the cast of this one, but if you’ve seen a film of any kind in the last 5 years or so, then you will be able to name over half of this ensemble. I don’t think the trailer does it justice either, and I really hope they didn’t plug up the trailer with all the good parts, I hate when they do that.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Mission Impossible – Lindsey Stirling and the Piano Guys

Lindsey Stirling makes another appearance on my YouTube video of the week list with a new take on the Mission Impossible theme. This time she team’s up with The Piano Guys and a chap with a cello. I am moving closer to the conclusion that any musical compilation that Lindsey comes out with, will be pure awesome.

News Article of the Week:

Norway goat cheese fire shuts down road tunnel.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/01/23/bring-your-fries-and-gravy-traffic-meltdown-as-massive-goat-cheese-fire-shuts-norway-road-tunnel/
Yes, you read that title correctly, a fire that consisted of gourmet goat cheese shut down a road tunnel in Norway. Not only did it shut the tunnel down, but it burned for 4 days and is expected to take weeks to clean up the mess. In Norway this particular goat cheese is known as Brunost, which is a caramelized brown cheese. I may have discovered an alternative fuel source.

Goat Cheese Fire, big news this week.
Expensive alternative fuel source.

Best of the Week – 0313

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week!

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters – In theatres January 25th, 2013

Synopsis:In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.
Who needs breadcrumbs when you can have bounty hunting! So, let’s take a favourite childhood story and update it for the 21st century. The cast is led by Jeremy Renner as Hansel(Hurt Locker, The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy) and Famke Janssen (X-Men series) as Muriel, but I’ll want to see it for Gemma Arteton as Gretel, as she was the gorgeous Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Toy Story : Live Action

Wow, this is stunning. YouTube user JonasonsMovies actually took the time to re-create the 1995 Disney/Pixar hit scene for scene, and with permission from Pixar! Given time and money, I would probably do something similar, or just keep making videos of my dachshund.

News Article of the Week:

Google denies killing a donkey in a Botswana hit and run.
http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/google-denies-killing-a-donkey-in-a-botswana-hit-and-run-1.1117386
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and in this case, it is. Google, who are working to get Street View in more and more locations, are currently uploading portions of Botswana, in Southern Africa. Eagle eyed users spotted what looked like a donkey lying dead in the road. Google has defended itself on the Street View blog, letting us know that the donkey is perfectly fine.

Best of the Week – 0213

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week!

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Zero Dark Thirty – In theatres January 11th, 2013

Synopsis:A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May, 2011.
If I can say anything for Americans, it is that they never forget, well.. almost never.* September 11th 2001 will be remembered just a vividly as December 7th 1941. This film looks to take us along for the journey, uncovering the 10 years worth of work it took to find and kill Osama Bin Laden, the suspected mastermind behind the attacks. To be brutally honest, I’m only going to watch it for one reason… Jessica Chastain.
Jessica Chastain, hot chick of the week.

Compressorhead – Ace of Spades

Compressorhead is the worlds heaviest metal band, literally… they’re robots and they rock. Stickboy, fingers, and bones are guaranteed to shake and rattle the world of meatbag music. Standaside meatbags. Oil is thicker than blood.

Sisters in New Zealand, aged 14 and 12, crash into each other.
http://www.news.com.au/national/underaged-nz-sisters-crash-into-each-other/story-fndo4bst-1226550481368
Isn’t New Zealand the same country that was showing off the driving dogs not so long ago? Now, having watched all Top Gear: Australia episodes, I can say for a fact that kids in that part of the world are given keys and taught to drive earlier than in North America, though normally it is in a back lot or field away from other drivers.

Best of the Week – 0113

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week, first of 2013!

Movie Trailer of the Week:

World War Z – In theatres June 21st, 2013

Synopsis:A U.N. employee is racing against time and fate, as he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly Zombie pandemic.
Zombies! They are all the rage now, so much more than vampires, cause they don’t sparkle and they don’t care about anything. Brad Pitt takes on the main role as Gerry Lane, and well, he’s about the only name I recognized in the cast list. Please don’t suck like your Chanel commercial, and cut your hair, you look like a hippy.

The Big Fat Quiz of the Year – 2012
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCpZStY70W8
The annual Channel 4 hit is back and better than ever… maybe, I still haven’t seen it yet, need to wait for the wife. As always, the show is hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr and features a few names you might know, including the ever-present Jonathan Ross and The IT Crowd‘s own Maurice Moss, Richard Ayoade.

Video captures a man brutalizing and having sex with a horse.
http://www.wtsp.com/news/watercooler/article/289853/58/FL-man-wanted-for-having-sex-with-horse
Mr. Ed would not approve. And I thought that the sheep in Scotland had something to worry about, now we have a crazy running around Florida having carnal relations with horses! I guess I shouldn’t pick on Scotland, considering my heritage… I need to pick on Florida, and here’s why.. .and I quote “Florida is one of a handful of states with laws against having sex with animals. That law passed in 2011.” 2011… up until just over a year ago it was ok??? Seriously Florida.

Best of the Week – 51&5212

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Pacific Rim – In theatres July 12th, 2013

Synopsis:When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.
Giant robots fighting to save earth??? sounds familiar doesn’t it, but this time I don’t expect everything to blow up like a Michael Bay film or star the overrated Shia Labeouf. This time we get Guillermo del Toro, who I must say has done some decent work, including writing some of The Hobbit, putting his spin on this tale. Most of the stars I don’t know, but it does have the awesome Ron Perlman.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Fifty Shades of George Takei

Although I haven’t, and don’t plan on reading this particular series of books, I can be amused when they are read by none other than George Takei. His rich, deep, voice almost makes this tolerable, plus he throws in a few of his trade mark “Oh My’s”.

Dental assistant fired for being “too hot”.

Women gets a job with dentist, works there 10 years, dresses like a woman. Dentist finds assistant attractive, maybe too attractive, starts texting assistant. Dentists wife finds out, demands assistant get fired for being attractive, woman gets fired. Woman sues for gender discrimination, court disagrees. Yup, we sure live in a sane world.

http://youtu.be/ll39CAovGrg?hd=1
Synopsis:An alien infant is raised on Earth, and grows up with superhuman abilities. He sets out to use these abilities to guard his adopted world.
You are probably getting tired of super hero movie reboots. Man of Steel is bringing us, what I would call the second reboot, of the Superman franchise. Henry Cavill, a relative unknown, is taking on the lead role as Clark Kent/Superman. Russell Crowe is going to be playing superman’s father, Jor-el. Superman’s nemesis, General Zod, will be played by Michael Shannon. Super sexy redhead Amy Adams takes on Lois Lane, and Clark’s parents are rounded out by Hollywood veterans Diane Lane and Kevin Costner.

Waze is a fun, community-based traffic & navigation app, 30 million strong. Join forces with other drivers nearby to outsmart traffic, save time & gas money, and improve everyone’s daily commute.
From what I have heard, and haven’t been able to confirm yet, is that you can also tag accidents and speed traps, which would be just plain awesome.

Production is only a limited run, so much so, that there are only 100 bottles, and they are all being given away to some of the first fans to like and comment on the post from Facebook. Game of the Week:

War Thunder – Gaijin
I love flying games and flight simulators, and I enjoy the challenge of going head to head against other arm-chair pilots. War Thunder, although it is still in beta, has an impressive choice of aircraft spanning multiple decades and amazing graphics. Although I have been distracted by the recently made free Battlefield 1942 and the fresh release of Planetside 2, I will find time to squeeze in some flying. Take note, it looks like they will be using a ‘freemium’ model, meaning the game is free to play, but you can spend money to buy premium upgrades.

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 4812

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Les Misérables – In theatres December 25th, 2012

Synopsis:In 19th century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless police officer Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever.
Based on the epic, multiple tome, novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables holds a soft spot in my heart. I read it twice and in French! This time around, yes, the film is being made again, it puts Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe and Sacha Baron Cohen together in an amazingly talented all start cast.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Does the Universe have a purpose?

It will all depend on your personal point of view, religious outlook and possibly your overall understanding of how things work. The same question was posed to Neil deGrasse Tyson, famed astrophysicist and science commentator, and the above video takes his answer and lays it out with some light music and awesome animation. Game of the Week:

Battlefield 1942 – EA
You might think me a tad insane for this choice, but hear me out. Originally released on September 10th, 2002, this was one of the first games to allow 64 players to face off in multi-player matches. It has spawned numerous expansions and sequels, and is one of the top revenue generating titles for EA. Well, to celebrate 10 years, it is now free. Go get it, and I’ll see you on the battlefield.
