Best of the Week – 2213

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Now You See Me – In theatres May 31st, 2013

Synopsis: An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.
This one may not be a re-make, at least that I know of, which is surprising in Hollywood these days. Now You See Me has a decent cast, with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman (yes, he should narrate every bodies life), Michael Caine (Legendary) and Mrs. BoratIsla Fisher.

YouTube Video of the Week:Will & Jaden Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Alfonso Ribeiro on the Graham Norton show.

Will Smith is a class act. This is not his first appearance on the Graham Norton show (last time he did the theme from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.), this time he raps with his son, does part of the Fresh Prince theme again, but this time with DJ Jazzy Jeff, and then gets joined by Alfonso and they all do the Carlton Dance… and they aren’t done there… Graham joins them and they all do a quick Apache by The Sugarhill Gang.

The Carlton - Dance of the week
The Carlton. If you don’t smile when you see this, you should just stop breathing.

News Article of the Week:

Drunk Driver was having sex before crash.
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/drunk-car-sex-crash-785912
It appears multi-tasking is not this mans strong suit, and I’m still trying to figure out the logistics involved with performing coitus while driving, and being intoxicated… At least he wasn’t using his cell phone.

As always, I’m still open to suggestions for other categories, and for nominations to get included on the list. You can let me know at: oftheweekATleighcDOTcom

Best of the Week – 1913

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Star Trek Into Darkness – In theatres May 17th, 2013

Synopsis: After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

KHAN, this week
Wrong Khan, but what the heck… it’s Kirk

Lens flare Ho! Yup, were getting ready for J.J. Abrams continuation of the Star Trek franchise he helped reboot in 2009. The complete story can probably be pasted together from all the trailers that have been released, with the exception of the ending… but we can assume Kirk and crew win. All the same actors are back from the first film to reprise their roles and are joined by the gorgeous Alice Eve as Dr. Carol Marcus and Sherlock… errr, I mean Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan Noonien Singh.

Khan
Ricardo Montalban as Khan in the original series.

Khan
and again in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

YouTube Video of the Week:

Zachary Quinto vs. Leonard Nimoy: The Challange
http://youtu.be/WPkByAkAdZs?hd=1
Props to Audi for this one, pitting Spock vs. Spock in this fun loving commercial for the brand new S7. Not only does it show off some of the features of the car, it is a decent little promo for Star Trek.

105 Year Old Texas women reveals sizzling longevity secret.

Bacon!  Yes, it’s as if I’ve been right all along.  This granny is on to something, and even garnered attention from Oscar Mayer, who gave her a ride in the famous wienermobile and some packages of free bacon.
Source story with a video is here.

Best of the Week – 1813

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Iron Man 3 – In theatres May 3rd, 2013 (Earlier in other parts of the globe)

Synopsis: When Tony Stark’s world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.
As much as I have enjoyed the Iron Man films, I do hope this is the last one in the series. Robert Downey Jr. has done a great job as Tony Stark, but it is time to put the suit to bed. RDJ is joined by Don Cheadle as Col. James Rhodes, the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and joined by Ben Kingsley who takes on the role of the main protagonist, the Mandarin.
NOTE: I wrote the above portion on Wednesday, before seeing the film for an advanced screening on Thursday… and of course, it is now Saturday, so most people will have already seen the film.

Iron Man 3, hard to miss this week

Honest Trailers – Iron Man 2

I figure, why not, since we’re on the subject already… Here is a different take on Iron Man 2, done by the fine folks at Screen Junkies (The same YouTube channel that I recommended you subscribe to a few weeks ago).

News Article of the Week:

School cancelled due to nice weather.
http://www.krmg.com/news/news/local/school-cancelled-due-nice-weather/nXgXY/
This is pretty much every kids dream, or at least kids that don’t live in Canada where we get snow days and 2 to 3 “professional development” days a month. I must say it is a novel idea to give the kids a nice day off, and since the school is located in Washington state, they probably see a lot of rainy days.

Best of the Week – 1713

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Pain & Gain – In theatres April 26th, 2013

Synopsis: A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.
Michael Bay films don’t normally get me excited, especially after the lens flare filled trilogy about transforming robots from my childhood that has been destroyed, and I can never get those moments back. This might make the list of safe films that Bay has been involved with. Pain & Gain pairs up Marc Wahlberg with Dwayne Johnson in an action comedy based on a true story.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Sir Richard Branson‘s Guide to Getting Lucky

I’m a big fan of Mr. Branson. He started out with a small record store and turned it into a global empire that includes airlines, cellular service, recording and more stores, just look at the complete list here. Now here he is announcing what seems to be a late April Fool’s joke, giving airline passengers the ability to order drinks and food for other’s they find attractive, and sending them a personalized hello message. I would never use it, but I’m sure there are others that will take full advantage of this new service.

News Article of the Week:

Mormon bishop runs off neighbours attacker using a samurai sword.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/24/us-usa-samurai-defense-idUSBRE93N04S20130424
What would you do if you child told you that your female neighbour was being mugged? Probably not what Kent Hendrix from Salt Lake City did. Hendrix rendered aid with the 29 inch long carbon steel samurai sword he keeps in his bedroom, most likely for self-defence. Hendrix, a trained martial arts instructor, confronted the attack, who backed down and later turned himself into the police.

Best of the Week – 1613

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Oblivion – In theatres April 19th, 2013

Synopsis: A veteran assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.
This has nothing to do with the Elder Scrolls series of video games, believe me. Here we are taking a look at another story about our own future, a look into a post war Earth where we are forced to re-think everything we know… kind of like the Matrix, but with no blue or red pills. Oblivion stars Tom Cruise in the main role, and he is joined by Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace), Andrea Riseborough (New to me, but cute), and the man should should narrate my life, Morgan Freeman.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Psy – Gentleman

Again, we won’t understand most of the lyrics, and we get to watch the South Korean pop sensation dance around silly well being moderately dressed… though I think he has the dressier version of MC Hammer‘s parachute pants on. Let’s help pad PSY’s retirement fund, as his newest video is only a week old and hovering around 150 million hits on YouTube. Oh, and does anyone know what a mother father gentleman is?

News Article of the Week:

Airport employee pens resignation letter on a cake.
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/airport-employee-pens-resignation-letter-cake-213626978.html
When it comes to quitting your job, there are many ways in which you can inform your current employer that you are done. Chris Holmes, who had worked as an immigration agent for the Border Force at the Stansted Airport, the other lesser know of the London Airports, may have found the tastiest way to say piss off, I’m done. He served up his notice on a cake.
Check out Chris’s website here, looks like he makes some other delicious looking treats.

Quitting via cake, news this week.

Best of the Week – 1513

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

42 – In theaters April 12th, 2013

Synopsis: The life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.
I may not big a big fan of Baseball, or a lot of other sports, but the Jackie Robinson story is important. It not only changed baseball, but a lot of other sports as well. The biggest name to star in this film is Harrison Ford, and he is joined by one of my favourites, Alan Tudyk and Chadwick Boseman, who will take on the main role.

News Article of the Week:

Researcher hacks aircraft controls with Android smartphone.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/04/11/hacking_aircraft_with_android_handset/
I’m and android user and I’m a pilot. This hits close to home, well, sort of. The gentlemen that did this is also an android fan and developer, and also a pilot. His main reason behind doing this little experiment was to open the eyes of the aviation industry to the fact that a lot of the systems used to monitor commercial aircraft are not secure. His presentation is great, but does leave out a lot of key information that will keep your everyday users from taking over the flight your on. If it helps, the FAA and EASA ere made aware of his findings months ago and are already working on fixes.

Meme of the Week:

Dogs wearing Pantyhose
This is an odd little fetish isn’t it. This fad seems to be taking China by storm.  After the original image from Chinese social network Weibo user Ulatang on April 2nd, hundreds of these photos have started popping up all over the internet. It’s almost like a strange new version of dogshaming.

Pantyhose dogs, meme of the week
The image that started it all.
More panythose dogs
A notable example, this one at least gets Zebra print boots.

Best of the Week – 1413

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Scary Movie 5 – In theaters April 12th, 2013

Synopsis: A couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their newborn son home from the hospital. With the help of home-surveillance cameras and a team of experts, they learn they’re being stalked by a nefarious demon.
Oh look, another spoof movie, though I will admit that the Scary Movie series does a decent job of poking fun at main stream films. This latest film in the series stars Ashley Tisdale, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Bubba Watson gets a new golf cart

2 weeks with golf related videos? I must be getting anxious for the courses to open here in New Brunswick. Golf carts haven’t changed much in years, though some people do customize them and add bling, but Bubba wanted something different. Oakley and Bubba came up with the BW1 Hovercraft.

Yes I want one.

Radio hosts back from suspension after ‘Dihydrogen Monoxide’ prank.
http://www.ihaveabuzz.com/articles/weird-news-104673/florida-radio-hosts-back-after-suspension-11142527/
Ok, so on April 1st, if someone on the radio is making claims that a chemical called Dihydrogen Monoxide has contaminated the water supply, do you believe them? If you live in Lee County Florida, you do. Although it is not the officially recognized chemical name, it does follow basic chemical nomenclature rules, it translates to H20, or as we normally call it, water.

Android App of the Week:

GPS Status & Toolbox.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
It is a basic app that gives you a plethora of information. Satellite position and strength, speed, acceleration, battery level, compass (magnetic and true north), altitude, pitch, roll, a level, reset A-GPS data, and the ability to mark your present location and return to it later. It runs nicely in the background whenever another app requires GPS data, and I have found that lock on time and accuracy is increased.

Best of the Week – 1313

Here we go with this weeks edition of Best of the Week.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

Jurassic Park 3D – In theaters April 5th, 2013
http://youtu.be/2jH9iAHSKds?hd=1
Synopsis: A wealthy man has created an island amusement park filled with dinosaurs cloned from fossilized DNA. When he invites experts to endorse it, nature takes over.
This film was one of the biggest blockbusters when I was younger, and now it’s back in 3D. Now, I’m not a big fan of 3D as it tends to make me sick, so I probably will not see this in theater, but it should be a good one for everyone else to go see.
The cast does include Sam Neill, Samuel L. Jackson and Jeff Goldblum.

YouTube Video of the Week:

Sergio Garcia climbs a tree to hit one-handed second shot

This has to be one of the most amazing golf shots that I, and probably you have ever seen or ever will. His first shot some how lands in a tree, so he scales the tree, finds the ball, asks for a wedge/high iron, then hits the shot one-handed and backwards. Talk about skill! I have a new respect for this man.

News Article of the Week:

Niceville women back in jail after shoe attack.
http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/weird/Niceville-Woman-Back-in-Jail-After-Shoe-Attack-Report–199876571.html
Did Austin Powers predict this or something? So this woman is released from jail after serving time for threatening to kill her father. While she is in jail, he gets rid of her dog. Now she’s out, and what does she do when she finds out? Yeah, unleashes the Rebook assault weapons.

Shoe Throwing news of the week
That really hurt! I’m gonna have a lump there, you idiot! Who throws a shoe? Honestly! You fight like a woman!

Movie Trailer of the Week:

G.I. Joe: Retaliation – In theaters March 29th, 2013

Synopsis: The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
There are only a few returning cast members from the last film, but they do include Channing Tatum as Duke, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Byung-hun Lee as Storm shadow. This time around we add a few new Joe’s into the mix including Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Roadblock, Bruce Willis as Joe Colton and Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye.

Movie Trailer of the Week:

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone – In theaters March 15th, 2013

Synopsis: When a street magician’s stunt begins to make their show look stale, superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton look to salvage on their act – and their friendship – by staging their own daring stunt.
2 movie trailers in a row about magicians? Maybe magic is making a come back. Not sure this is going to rank in my list of films that must be seen in theater  more likely it will rank in the “I’ll wait for it to come out on Blu-Ray” category.
The cast is led by Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, and features Alan Arkin, Steve Buscemi and the sexy Olivia Wilde.

Pepsi Max & Jeff Gordon present: “Test Drive”
http://youtu.be/Q5mHPo2yDG8?hd=1
Yes, I know it’s a fake… it’s not really Jeff Gordon (debatable) and the car sales rep is a paid actor, but who cares. Pepsi has put together one of the best and most original advertisements I’ve seen recently. I would so love to this myself, but I’m not skilled as a driver, if I was… I might be The Stig‘s Canadian cousin.

Twinkies buyer says cakes could be back by summer.
http://www.kansascity.com/2013/03/12/4116788/twinkies-buyer-says-cakes-could.html
You might remember how the USA almost imploded back in November 2012 when Hostess, the company that makes Twinkies, Ding Dongs and those awesome cupcakes with the white icing twirl on them, declared bankruptcy and stopped operations. Well, there is hope, someone is buying up the tasty little treats and hopes to have them back on store shelves soon.
Twinkies, not back this week, but soon.
